Pedal Application Error
Our Research

PsyDrive were commissioned by Transport for London (TfL) to investigate the psychological contributors to pedal application error (PAE) amongst London bus drivers. TfL has described pedal confusion as “the manoeuvre where a driver confuses the acceleration pedal with the brake pedal resulting in either sudden unintended acceleration or harsh braking”. Drivers involved in PAE incidents think they are braking rather than accelerating and may press the accelerator pedal even harder, leading to rapid acceleration in some cases. The research aims to review the literature, observe PAE incidents and propose effective training and guidance materials for London bus drivers. The final report is expected to be published in 2025.
